Power restored at busy Chapel Hill intersection after overnight storms

On Thursday at 6 a.m., the traffic signals on U.S. Highway 15-501 at Interstate 40 were out, forcing cars to turn left across multiple lanes to access 15-501. Power was restored to the intersection by 8:30 a.m.

Before the lights were back on, WRAL's Nia Harden witnessed cars speeding through the intersection, drivers unaware of the outage.

The storms that caused the outages moved away in the early morning hours, but hundreds were still without power Thursday morning, most in Chapel Hill and southeast of the Triangle.

The pockets of outages were scattered, with communities along Hillsborough Street and Honeycutt Road in Raleigh without power in the overnight hours. By Thursday morning, power had been restored to most Raleigh customers, but there were more than 300 outages in Wake and Durham counties at 7 a.m.

The most outages in central N.C. were in Granville County, where 2,529 were without power.

Crews were working to restore power quickly.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said more storms will be likely Thursday afternoon, but there is no threat for severe weather.
