A 30-year-old Mayville woman and her 1-year-old son were killed in a crash in Washington County early Wednesday.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said the dispatch center received multiple 911 calls around 5:42 a.m. reporting a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 164 and Elmwood Road in the Village of Richfield.

One of the 911 callers reported that a woman and her baby had severe injuries and were unconscious.

An initial investigation found that the Mayville woman was operating her vehicle going southbound when she was rear-ended and pushed into the northbound lanes. The Mayville woman's vehicle was then struck by a vehicle traveling northbound. The collision resulted in the woman and her baby dying at the scene.

There were other injuries in the multi-vehicle crash, but the sheriff's office did not provide any details. "Upon arrival of the first deputy, it was determined that three vehicles had extensive damage and the vehicle occupants of each vehicle required medical attention," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The crash remains under investigation and no further information will be released at this time, the sheriff's office said. Highway 164 was closed from Highway Q to Highway 167 for approximately 4½ hours to assist in the crash investigation.

They are the 6th and 7th traffic fatalities this year in Washington County, according to the sheriff's office.
