Sheriff's office spokeswoman says inmates demanded to be served three hot meals

Some inmates at the Clay County Detention Center caused a disturbance Wednesday night over the food they are served, the sheriff's office said.Sarah Boyd, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said the disturbance started about 6:30 p.m. She said two pods of inmates were upset with the number of daily hot meals they receive and protested by refusing to return to their cells.According to the sheriff, the inmates were in a common area, but when they were told to return to their cells, they refused. The jail activated its Detention Emergency Response Team.Boyd said deputies used a couple of pepper balls. A short time later, inmates in one pod returned to their cells. One person from that pod, considered the instigator, was detained.Inmates from the second pod were still in the common area were refusing to return to their cells. All inmates were back in their cells by 9:30 p.m. No one was hurt.The sheriff's office said inmates receive two hot meals a day and they are served a third prepackaged meal. Boyd said the inmates were demanding three daily hot meals.
