A Bluffdale teen is facing reckless driving charges after Stockton Police stopped him driving at "extreme speeds" in Tooele County.

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, police observed a black Audi passenger car traveling southbound on SR-36 at a high rate of speed.

An officer with the Stockton Police Department stationed at the intersection of Connor and Silver Street recorded the car going 81 mph in a 40 mph zone.

The Audi began weaving in and out of oncoming traffic and reached speeds of 90 mph as the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, officials said.

The vehicle finally stopped three miles south of town.

According to police, the driver said he was speeding because he was in between sales appointments and was trying to get home to rest before his next appointment.

While police were speaking to the driver, multiple other vehicles stopped to tell officers how the vehicle passed them in no passing zones, and "blew by them," officials said.

It was the most recent of several high-speed traffic violations law enforcement officials have encountered throughout the state in recent months.

A new law that takes effect in July will automatically classify speeding above 105 mph as reckless driving.

The law also sets a minimum fine for anyone cited for driving faster than 100 mph.
