Chamber members learn about new delivery fee

Akron Chamber of Commerce met Monday, June 20 for their regular meeting with ten members present.  Odells Super’s prepared the meal for the day.   President Susan Watson opened the meeting.  The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were approved.

Watson reported on upcoming events, including the annual car show, Saturday, June 25; movie in the park, Friday, July 15; Eastern Colorado Roundup, July 26-31; Bull Bash, Friday, August 12; and Crazy Days, Saturday, August 13.  School will be starting soon after that.

Farmer’s Market was discussed and a tentative date of July 6 was given as the start date, depending on how much produce will be ready to be sold.

There was then a discussion on having a banner made to honor Chamber members and hang the banner during fair in both the Event Center and at the livestock sale buyer’s BBQ on Friday evening.  Lori Baer moved to have a banner made to use during fair to thank Chamber members for supporting their town and the Chamber.  This was approved.

Baer moved that Chamber donate $100 to the BBQ to help provide drinks for the buyers and this was approved.  Baer also moved to give $100 to the 4-H Department to be used for 4-H awards and this was approved.

Watson handed out informative papers from the Bank of Colorado on cryptocurrency and protecting yourself from fraud.  There has been quite a bit of fraud in Akron and the county and the bank is trying to get information out.  There will be a longer article in next week’s paper.

Baer spoke about a new retail delivery fee that is being imposed by the state.  If you sell taxable items that are delivered by a motor vehicle to a place in Colorado, you will now be required to charge, collect and remit a new fee to the Colorado Department of Revenue.  This will take effect on July 1, 2022 and applies to all retail sales, including third party deliveries.  The charge will be 27 cents per delivery and is charged to the purchaser.  This will include grocery stores that deliver (which means Odells), restaurants that deliver, flower shops that deliver, other stores that deliver, such as furniture, online stores that ship orders;and business to business retail sales.

Members were asked to keep their eyes open for a July Yard of the Month nomination.  If anybody sees a yard they would like to nominate for Yard of the Month, please contact Jo Anne Busing or Susan Watson.

The $10 in Chamber bucks was awarded to Susan Brown of Town and Country Insurance.  The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, July 18 at Akron Town Hall.
