HENDERSON COUNTY AWARDED $400,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR LOCAL PROJECTS

FRANKFORT, KY (June 22, 2022) — Federal Land and Water Conservation Funds (LWCF) totaling $400,000 have been awarded to Henderson County for Phase II of the Airline Road Sports Complex and the construction of a restroom facility at Sandy Lee Watkins Park.

“I’m extremely grateful for the allocation of these federal funds and excited about the services it will bring to the residents of Henderson County,” said Sen. Robby Mills, R-Henderson. “A tremendous amount of hard work is going into both of these projects.”

These funds will assist in Phase II of the Airline Road Sports Complex, including the construction of six baseball diamonds and associated lighting, two multi-purpose fields, one concession/restroom area, parking lots, driving areas, and associated lighting and pedestrian walkways.

The Sandy Lee Watkins Park Restroom Facilities project will include the construction of an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant comfort station and restroom facility. Work will include the installation of electric and water lines, meters, and plumbing fixtures for the new facility.

LWCF funding is administered by the Department for Local Government (DLG) following federal review and approval of applications by the National Park Service. LWCF provides federal grant funds to protect important natural areas, acquire land for outdoor recreation, and develop or renovate public outdoor recreation facilities, such as campgrounds, picnic areas, sports playfields, swimming facilities, boating facilities, fishing facilities, trails, natural areas, and passive parks.

“A thank you is also owed to the folks at the Department for Local Government who played a vital role in helping local leaders navigate the application process,” Mills said. “It’s a tedious process for all involved, but our community is better-served thanks to the efforts.”
