LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) – A Lexington County daycare center that has been at the center of controversy in the past several months is now up for sale.
WACH FOX News learned the owners of Windsor Academy Child Development Center in Lexington put it on the market about two weeks ago.
Back in April, Lexington County deputies arrested three Windsor Academy workers. Shayna McKnight, Amy Marie Grice, and Jeannie Locklear were all charged in a child abuse investigation after reports that a child suffered a broken leg in their care.
The SC Child Care website shows more than five dozen complaints filed with DSS against Windsor Academy dating back to 2019.
The current owners have owned the academy for more than two decades but feel the recent issues are making it necessary to sell.
“It’s time. I’m 80 and my husband is 82, and we just feel like that we are not able to do what we used to do with this center to make it a quality center like the goal was always,” said Elaine Harkey.
She tells WACH FOX News she left everything in the care of the director, Jeannie Locklear, and was mostly in the dark about complaints.
“It’s shocking,” said Harkey. “I feel bad for the parents who have nowhere to go, there’s a year waiting list in every daycare in the whole area, and so the parents that we lost have nowhere really to keep their children, and it’s a shame.”
The owners also own Kid City and Windsor West. According to online DSS records, Windsor West is temporarily closed. However, the owners tell WACH FOX News it is open.
