Veteran Hollywood star Steve Guttenberg (“Cocoon,” “Police Academy,” “Three Men and a Baby,” “Diner”) will star in an autobiographical comedy, “Tales From the Guttenberg Bible,” as part of the five-show 2022-23 season of the George Street Playhouse, which presents its shows at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center.
To open the season, George Street Playhouse artistic associate Laiona Michelle, who previously has starred in GSP productions such as “American Hero” and “Little Girl Blue: The Nina Simone Musical,” will direct “Her Portmanteau,” Mfoniso Udofia’s play about Nigerian-American immigrants, Oct. 11-30.
The musical “JOY,” which will be presented Dec. 7-30, is based on the life of Joy Mangano, the entrepreneur, inventor (Miracle Mop, Huggable Hangers) and QVC personality who also inspired the 2015 Jennifer Lawrence movie “Joy.” AnnMarie Milazzo, who co-wrote the music to the recent George Street offering “A Walk on the Moon,” is writing the songs.
“Clyde’s,” a comedy written by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, will be presented from Jan. 31 to Feb. 19. The 2021-22 Broadway production was nominated for five Tonys.
Next up is “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” which will run from March 14 to April 9.
Then the season will end with “Tales From the Guttenberg Bible,” which features stories from Guttenberg’s own life, April 25 to May 21.
