A Turtlepoint couple have been sentenced to probation for attempting to scam a Philadelphia-area woman out of over $85,000.
61-year-old James Loveless and 67-year-old Catherine Loveless pled guilty in Schuylkill County Court to charges of criminal attempt to commit theft by unlawful taking; criminal attempt to commit theft by deception, conspiracy to commit theft, criminal attempt – theft, and two counts of criminal attempt of criminal use of communication facility.
The charges stem from the couple telling a Coaldale woman that she had won the Publishers’ Clearing House Sweepstakes, and that she needed to write two checks for $885 and one for $85,000 to claim her prize. The woman’s local bank teller became suspicious when the couple tried to cash the $85,000 check.
The couple were each sentenced to 12 months’ probation.
I’m sorry but I don’t feel sorry for people that are so stupid to even think of doing something like that… Why the heck would you write a check to somebody that you don’t even know for $85000… $885 would be bad enough but you’re stupid enough to go for $85000 yeah that’s just plain stupid
I totally agree, but 12 months probation is not proper punishment for this. They should do some time and pay fines and then probation.
