Topline

Billionaire media tycoon Robert Murdoch and his former supermodel wife Jerry Hall are getting a divorce after six years of marriage, two anonymous sources with knowledge of the situation told the New York Times.

Key Facts

The divorce is unlikely to have much of an effect on the ownership of Murdoch’s media empire, which includes the parent companies of the Wall Street Journal, Fox News and British newspapers The Times and Sunday Times, according to the New York Times.

Representatives for Murdoch and Hall did not immediately respond to Forbes’ requests for comment.

Big Number

$17.7 billion. That’s how much Murdoch and his family are worth, according to Forbes’ real-time wealth tracker.

Key Background

Murdoch, 91, and Hall, 65, wed in March 2016 in London, and at the time Murdoch referred to himself as “the luckiest and happiest man in the world.” The divorce would be Murdoch’s fourth and Hall’s second, after her previous marriage to Rolling Stone Mick Jagger ended in an annulment (Hall reportedly received more than $40 million in a settlement). Murdoch, a native of Australia, inherited his first newspaper from his father when he was just 22, building it into a global behemoth. Hall, who hails from Texas, was one of the most well-known fashion models of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
