The Virginia State Police is investigating the death of an inmate at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield.

Investigators say Sherri Cook, 43, of Whitesburg, Kentucky was taken to the jail for processing on the afternoon of May 20. Cook's behavior was described as "combative" and she was "secured in a safety chair."

Jail officials found Cook unresponsive shortly after 7:00 p.m. They began administering CPR and then she was taken to the hospital where she was declared dead.

Cook's body was taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.

The investigation remains ongoing.
