A four-day investigation and search for a suspect in two crimes reported Saturday culminated with a two-and-a-half-hour standoff late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, according to police.

The standoff started around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Sixth Avenue Northeast and ended with the peaceful surrender of a man at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Aberdeen Police Department. The man's name is not being released pending his initial appearance in court, which could be Friday or Monday.

The man is facing multiple charges, including first-degree burglary and third-degree rape, commission of a felony while armed, felony possession of a firearm and a parole violation, all of which are in connection to the police report taken Saturday, according to the release.

Brown County State's Attorney Ernest Thompson said the man is being held on a no-bond warrant as judges are currently attending the South Dakota Bar Association Conference.

Aberdeen police Capt. Tanner Jondahl said investigators found the suspect Tuesday night through the course of investigative work that started at 8 a.m. Investigators determined he was at the Sixth Avenue Northeast apartment building around 9 p.m. and was potentially armed with a handgun. The police department's special response and crisis negotiations teams were activated around 11 p.m., per the release.

Handgun found after suspect surrenders

The apartment was not the suspect's residence, Jondahl said. He said a handgun was found in the apartment after the man surrendered.

Residents of the apartment building were advised to evacuate. Jondahl said all but one voluntarily evacuated.

The man arrested was sought in connection to a report of a burglary and sexual assault from Saturday afternoon, according to the release. The burglary charge alleges that he entered an occupied structure with the intent to commit an assault.

Pursuit speeds exceed 80 mph after suspect flees Monday

Officers began searching for the suspect, who was identified by the victim on Saturday, and initially found him driving around Aberdeen Monday at 1 a.m. But, when a police officer activated his patrol car lights, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed, according to police.

Because of the nature of the crime, the officer pursued the suspect through a large portion of southern Aberdeen.

Additional police officers and a Brown County sheriff's deputy joined in the pursuit, which eventually went onto U.S. Highway 12 toward U.S. Highway 281 with speeds exceeding 80 mph.

As he approached Highway 281, the suspect began entering oncoming traffic lanes and, due to safety concerns, officers discontinued the pursuit, according to the release.

The deputy took over the pursuit, which eventually ended near the Spink County line, per the release.

The suspect also faces several traffic offenses, including aggravated eluding, failure to obey a traffic control device, two charges of failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, speeding and no valid driver's license.

The Brown County Sheriff's Officer and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation helped with the case on Tuesday.
