The Senior Melons have found their groove this season and when they hosted McCook on June 15, the bats on both sides of the diamond were in fine form.

Gothenburg collected nine hits and scored 13 runs with a dramatic walk-off win.

Jake Kozeal, Tra Rossell and Tubby Baker each had two hits in the game.

McCook plated six runs in the first inning to get out to a big, early lead.

Gothenburg countered with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame and scored another to inch within two runs heading into the fourth inning.

Four more McCook runs pushed the deficit to five runs.

Gothenburg kept chipping away, though and scored again in the bottom of that inning to decrease the lead to just four.

McCook brought three more runners home to hold a 12-5 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth when the Melons plated three more runs to bring the score to 12-8 going to the top of the seventh.

Gothenburg held the visitors scoreless in the top of that frame and got to work in the bottom of the seventh.

Maddox Rickertsen was hit by a pitch to lead off the Melons’ half of the inning.

Trey Stevens drew a walk to put runners at first and second.

JJ Smith hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Rickersten out at third and leaving runners on first and second.

Stevens and Smith advanced on a wild pitch before Rossell singled on a hard ground ball to the shortstop.

Stevens and Smith scored and Rossell took second on the play.

Kozeal reached on an error by the second baseman, sending Rossell to third.

Baker stepped to the plate and singled on a ground ball to second to load the bases.

Bronson Long drew a walk to advance the runners and bring a run home for the Melons and Gothenburg was within a run of tying the game with only one out and the bases still loaded.

After a Bennett Geiken strikeout, Wes Geiken sent a hard ground-ball deep to short to score Kozeal and Baker for the Melons walk-off win.

Rossell had three RBIs and Baker and Bennett Geiken each had doubles in the game.

Baker, Rossell and Bennett Geiken worked from the mound, collecting six strikeouts in the game.

June 17 saw the senior Melons head to Holdrege where a seven-run third inning for the home team was more than Gothenburg could handle.

The Melons plated nine runs in the game but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit and they dropped the road game, 15-9.

Wes Geiken had three hits in the game, and Bennett Geiken and Kozeal each had two.

Rickertsen and Baker each had two RBIs.

Gothenburg hosted Ogallala on June 21 and Broken Bow June 22 before hitting the road for Imperial to take on Chase County on June 25.
