Summer has decided to join us this last week. With that, July is quickly approaching, and we hope you are planning on celebrating this great country of ours on the 4th of July.

Just for your information, the main building of the library in Brush will be closed to the public on Monday, July 4. However, there are activities in the library park that are open to the public. The Brush Lions Club will be hosting their pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m., the 34th Annual Quilt Show will be open from 7 to 11 a.m., and the parade will take place at 10 a.m. We will resume our normal hours on Tuesday, July 5.

The 2019 EMCH Quilt Show boasts 31 entries from around Morgan County. Entries are being accepted for the 2022 Quilt Show from June 20 to 25 at the library in Brush. (Cora Rhode / The Fort Morgan Times)

For you quilters who would like to showcase your quilts during the quilt show, please bring your quilts into the library during this week, through Saturday, June 25. Then come enjoy the quilt show, starting on Wednesday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional hours for the quilt show are: June 29 to July 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Sunday, July 3; open Monday, July 4 from 7 to 11 a.m.; and open July 5 to 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Our patrons enjoyed a pirate of a good time June 15 with Isaac from Talewise at Summer Reading.

On Wednesday, June 22 at 3 p.m., Summer Reading will feature our annual rotation station program, with EMCL hosting the Brush City Street Department and their vehicles, a petting zoo with bunnies, kittens, donkeys, llamas, etc., and a leather craft. Who knows, there might even be a water game involved.
Then join us the next week for an ocean-themed activity at Summer Reading on June 29 at 3 p.m. Following our June programs, we will start off Summer Reading in July with Meghan Casey on Wednesday, July 6 at 3 p.m.

All of our Summer Reading program events are free and family friendly.

Book Recommendations

If you need a good book to read, here are a couple to consider:

The first book is titled “Afraid,” written by Lisa Jackson, Alexandra Ivy and Lisa Childs. These three authors teamed up to write a mystery about three former students who attended St. Cecilia’s School for Girls in Salzburg, Austria: Lucy, Rayne, and Erin.

Lucy Champagne was sent to St. Cecilia’s after her movie-star mother was brutally attacked by her sleazy boyfriend, Ray Watkins. Lucy’s damning testimony landed Ray a 25-year sentence. But now, Ray is free. And he’s going to find Lucy and make her pay, no matter how far and how fast she runs… . Rayne Taylor found unexpected happiness at St. Cecilia’s, until her roommate, Natalie, committed suicide. Only when Rayne finds a box of mementoes from that time does she realize how wrong she may have been about Natalie’s death – and how far someone will go to keep the truth hidden…. and Erin MacDonald who remembers little about the long-ago night she and her sister, Anna Beth, were kidnapped. While Erin was found safe, Anna Beth vanished forever. Now Erin has reluctantly come back to the family estate, where Detective Rafe Montego hopes to finally crack the case. But as flashes of Erin’s memory reemerge, she learns how deep the danger goes….

Another new book on our new bookshelf is by author Chris Bohjalian, who wrote a dynamic story titled “The Lioness.”

The Lioness takes place in Tanzania in the year 1964 when Katie Barstow, A-list actress, and her new husband, David Hill, decide to bring their Hollywood friends to the Serengeti for their honeymoon, they envision giraffes gently eating leaves from the tall acacia trees, great swarms of wildebeests crossing the Mara River, and herds of zebras storming the sandy plains. Their glamorous guests — including Katie’s best friend, Carmen Tedesco, and Terrance Dutton, the celebrated Black actor who stars alongside Katie in the highly controversial film Tender Madness — will spend their days taking photos, and their evenings drinking chilled gin and tonics back at camp, as the local Tanzanian guides warm water for their baths. The wealthy Americans expect civilized adventure: fresh ice from the kerosene-powered ice maker, dinners of cooked gazelle meat, and plenty of stories to tell over lunch back on Rodeo Drive.

What Katie and her glittering entourage do not expect is this: a kidnapping gone wrong, their guides bleeding out in the dirt, and a team of Russian mercenaries herding their hostages into Land Rovers, guns to their heads. As the powerful sun gives way to night, the gunmen shove them into abandoned huts and Katie Barstow, Hollywood royalty, prays for a simple thing: to see the sun rise one more time.

You can find these and more books on the new shelf this summer at East Morgan County Library in Brush.
