Kekis Cafe opened earlier this month in Fremont at 601 W. State St. Owner Dora Ortiz said the new restaurant has a number of breakfast and lunch menu items, including Mexican breakfast staples like huevos rancheros, chilaquiles and breakfast burritos.

FREMONT — For a long time, Dora Ortiz saw the need to fill a niche in Fremont for people who like Mexican food as a breakfast option.

Her vision became a reality earlier this month, as Ortiz opened Kekis Cafe on West State Street.

Kekis moved into the 601 W. State St. building previously occupied by AM KornerCafe.

Dora Ortiz, owner of Kekis Cafe in Fremont, said the new restaurant features popular Mexican breakfast items, as well as classic breakfast servings and lunch. The restaurant is located at 601 W. State St. in the old AM Corner location.

"We are already seeing people come back, That's always a good sign," Ortiz said Wednesday, as she went back and forth between Kekis' kitchen and visiting with customers.

Kekis opened June 7, with hours from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week.

Ortiz said her parents own Casa Fiesta on Hayes Avenue.

She said her father was a customer at AM Korner and told her that longtime restaurant's owner had been looking to sell the West State Street site.

It took Ortiz more than six months to renovate Kekis before it opened.

Ortiz's Mexican breakfast menu includes huveos rancheros, cazuela de huevos, chilaquiles, huevos con chorizo, huevos la mexicana and breakfast burritos.

She said the chilaquiles —corn tortilla chips served with red, green or a mix of both sauces — and huevos con chorizos were two items she thought would be favorites for Kekis' customers.

Ortiz said Kekis also offers classic breakfast items such as biscuits and gravy, home fries, bacon and eggs, pancakes, omelets and a vegan plate.

Kekis' lunch menu includes mega beef, chicken and steak burritos, quesadillas, street tacos and veggie burritos, as well as desserts (arroz con leche and chocolate cake) and a kid's menu.

Dora Ortiz, owner of Kekis Cafe in Fremont, makes a breakfast burrito with chorizo at the restaurant's 601 W. State St. location. Kekis opened June 7 and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ortiz said the entire menu is available to customers any time of the day.

Kekis' menu is available online at the restaurant's Facebook page at facebook.com/Kekis-Cafe-105409158695472.

Ortiz said she will eventually start adding off-the-menu items and menu specials from time to time.

She said she's already seeing some familiar faces from Casa Fiesta.

"My brother is really good at advertising and sending people over for breakfast," Ortiz said.

With her State Street location, Ortiz hopes to attract customers from Downtown Fremont events and the Sandusky County Courthouse, with both being in close proximity to Kekis.
