Amateur Radio Operators to test emergency communications in a field day event

The public can participate on Saturday, June 25

RENTON, WA – Renton Emergency Communication Service (RECS) will practice their emergency response capabilities in a 24-hour field day event on June 25 and 26, 2022, at Thomas Teasdale Park (601 S 23rd St.).

RECS is a team of local amateur (ham) radio operators. The event is part of the annual American Radio Relay League Field Day. The country-wide event involves over 35,000 amateur radio operators who use emergency or alternate power sources under simulated emergency conditions.

The public can attend on Saturday, June 25, from 12 to 8 p.m. Tours of the mobile communications response unit vehicle will be available, along with a prize drawing and a chance to talk live on the air.

Ham radio operators have provided critical communications in many recent emergencies. During a local disaster, normal communication channels may become inoperable. Renton’s amateur radio operators have proven to be the most reliable low-tech source of communication available for the city.

For more information on how you can become an amateur radio operator or join RECS, visit their website at www.rentonecs.net or email [email protected].
