LOWER BURRELL, Pa. — Rows and rows of cars lined up this Wednesday morning, some as early as 8 o’clock, all for a chance to fill up their tank at $2.38 a gallon — the national average in January 2021.

“I think it’s ridiculous it came down to this but it’s good. It’s good someone’s stepping up,” said Margie Shutack, who was first in line.
The promotion was a partnership between the locally-owned BP gas station and the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity, a nonprofit advocacy group founded by the Koch brothers.
The first 150 cars were tagged and waited for a pump to open at the BP gas station on Leechburg Road in Lower Burrell for the two-hour promotion.
This was all a part of the group’s “True Cost of Washington” campaign, highlighting the costs of inflation.

“We’re going to ask for their stories so we can scale that to our congressional delegation,” said Ashley Klingensmith, Pennsylvania director for Americans for Prosperity.
“In Westmoreland, we’re really really struggling for the price of gas with everything being inflated,” said driver Damita Rupp.
If you have a 10-gallon tank in your car, we estimated the price difference here today cost the gas station about $4000, and we’re told Americans for Prosperity absorbed the costs today.
