Sandy Alderson hints Mets might not be all-in this year: We won’t sell the farm ahead of trade deadline

Just how committed are the New York Mets to winning the World Series this year?

Back in the winter, general Billy Eppler opened Steve Cohen’s wallet (Cohen is MLB’s richest owner) and threw money at free agents Max Scherzer and Starling Marte as the Mets assembled the highest-paid roster in baseball.

Despite injuries to Scherzer and Jacob deGrom, the plan seems to be working. The Mets (45-24) have the best record in the National League and 5.5-game lead over the Atlanta Braves (39-29) in the National League East.

Now Eppler has to decide if he will go the distance and keep adding to the roster ahead of the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

However Mets president Sandy Alderson, in a conversation Monday with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, indicated the club might not go for broke in an attempt to return to the World Series for the first time since 2015.

“I have great confidence in Billy and his baseball staff. And to date, they’ve made a number of very good decisions. None of us ever hits 100%. So if we get to the deadline, however, it’s not just a matter of making baseball decisions, but it’s balancing short term for long term, and we’ve got some very good prospects, four or five of them, probably everybody will be asking for those. And we’ve got to be very careful. We gave up a good prospect last year and he’s doing very well this year for the Cubs. So it will be kind of a joint conversation. I have been and will continue to be pretty deferential to Billy and his staff.”

The Mets-Cubs trade Alderson appears to be referencing is last year’s deadline deal for infielder Javier Baez, who left after the 2021 season and signed a six-year, $140 million contract with the Detroit Tigers.

The Mets gave up minor-league outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong in that deal. MLB Pipeline ranks Crow-Armstrong as the Cubs’ No. 3 prospect.
