Eleven Michelin Stars were awarded to Miami restaurants for the first time in history. Given to the best restaurants each year, a Michelin Star’s a highly coveted award in the restaurant industry. According to the Michelin Guide, “We take into account the quality of the ingredients, the harmony of flavors, the mastery of techniques, the personality of the chef as expressed in their cuisine and, just as importantly, consistency both over time and across the entire menu.”

This ultimately means previously awarded restaurants may get an annual assessment as well. Another glance can mean another star, so chef’s are always on their toes after getting such an award.

Michelin Star Florida restaurants are excited about the possibility of keeping the stars for another year as well. Rolando Aedo, part of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau told CBS News, “there’s nothing like a little pressure of keeping your star to keep your game up… This is going to elevate the state of Florida’s culinary standing, and frankly elevate the experiences, not only within the cities but throughout the state.”

On an interesting note, neither the service nor the ambiance come into play when considering whether or not a restaurant gets a Michelin Star. The biggest priority is the restaurant serves consistently delicious food. Michelin Inspectors work full-time. Inspectors travel to all 39 cities in the 23 countries that make the Michelin Guide. These professional food connoisseurs take a full year and several visits to make a decision on the awards.

Unfortunately, Miami has never had a Michelin Guide, therefore the city’s restaurants have never had the opportunity to win such high prestige. All of that has changed. The Michelin Guide is now in Miami. Eleven Michelin Stars were awarded in Miami for the first time in history. However, only L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon received two Michelin Stars.

Michael Beltran owns Ariete, one of the restaurants recently awarded a Miami Michelin Star. Beltran divulged to CBS News, “It shows there’s real food here. That there’s great food here. And now there’ are 15 Michelin Stars in the state and 11 in Miami. There’s no way you can say anything against that because now it’s a fact.”
