A Chicago man faces weapons charges after a witness saw him throw a suitcase over an Iowa City bridge.

An officer responded to an accident in the area of East College and Gilbert Street Monday at 6:23 pm. During the investigation, a witness reported that 30-year-old Mack Blumingburg threw a suitcase over the bridge.  Other officers located the suitcase, and allegedly found a Taurus 9mm handgun inside.

Blumingburg reportedly denied that the suitcase was his and denied any knowledge of the handgun belonging to him. Further investigation into the incident led Blumingburg to allegedly admit to throwing the suitcase over the bridge, and that the clothing inside the suitcase was his. He also admitted knowing that there was a weapon in the suitcase, and his fingerprints would be on it.

Blumingburg is prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm due to numerous felony convictions, including three for 2nd degree Theft and one for Armed Carjacking.

Blumingburg was charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
