Man hospitalized after canoe sinks along Keweenaw Peninsula

EAGLE HARBOR, MI— A man was taken to the hospital Sunday after his canoe sank off Eagle Harbor in Keweenaw County.

Around 2:20 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office was notified a subject was past the bell buoy and was having difficulty getting back into the harbor. A few moments later it was reported the canoe had sunk and the man was in distress.

Eagle Harbor Fire and medical first responders searched the area with the help of citizens and two private boats, but due to stormy conditions had to return to shore.

Sheriff’s deputies on a personal watercraft continued to search with the help of a civilian in the Eagle Harbor lighthouse and a private boat with a deputy onboard. They found the man, pulled him from the water with a personal watercraft, and brought him to the marina.

He was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and treated for severe hypothermia and water intake.
