Another Democrat has thrown their hat into the ring for Congressman Ted Deutch’s seat.
Monday, Allen Ellison announced his candidacy for Florida's 23rd District.
Ellison’s campaign calls him the most progressive candidate to help address the district’s residents’ top concerns, which include gun safety and crime.
"I have been robbed at gunpoint and I have lost two nephews, one uncle and two cousins to senseless gun violence," Ellison said. "I don't want my daughter, your daughters and sons or any member of our society to ever face what I and countless others have lost to gun violence. This is very personal for me. No one is going to fight as hard as I am on this issue."
He also wants to focus on affordable housing, water quality, social security, and student debt.
Ellison owns a manufacturing business in Boca Raton and his wife is a practicing physician in Broward County.
He had been running for Marco Rubio’s U.S. Senate seat but withdrew.
The primary election will be on Aug. 23.
Democrats Ellison will be facing include Broward County commissioner Jared Moskowitz,Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Ben Sorensen, Michaelangelo Hamilton and Hava Holzhauer.
Republicans running in their party's primary include Ira Weinstein, James Pruden, Darlene Swaffar, Christy McLaughlin, Jeffrey Berk, Myles Perrone, Joe Budd, Lewis Swezy and Saad Suleman.
Deutch is not seeking reelection. In February, he announced he’ll become chief executive officer of the American Jewish Committee.
