World Championships: Kristof Milak Ominous As He Sets The Pace In 200 Fly; Chad Le Clos A No-Show

Kristof Milak led the way in the 200 fly as he made his first individual appearance of the World Championships in Budapest.

Milak crushed the world record at the last World Championships in Gwangju in 2019, lowering Michael Phelps’ long-standing mark to 1:50.73.

There has been talk of the 22-year-old going sub 1:50 at the Duna Arena and the Olympic champion showcased his speed on the opening night when he split 46.89 on the anchor leg of the 4×100 free as Hungary came fifth.

Easy speed guided him through the race before a late spurt saw him into the wall in 1:54.10, the swiftest in the field, although Chad Le Clos, slated for lane six, did not appear as he felt unwell in the morning.

Noe Ponti, who won 100 bronze in Tokyo, had set the pace in 1:54.75 with Tomoru Honda the only other man inside 1:55 in 1:54.94.

I’d love to see Milak go sub 1:50.
