Muskingum County gets brownfield funding

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program of the Ohio Department of Development is awarding $192 million to projects in 41 counties.

The Muskingum County Land Reutilization Corporation is receiving $120,000 for asbestos abatement at Munson Elementary, which was built in the 1920s and used solely as an elementary school until 2005.

The site has been vacant for 17 years and is in poor condition. The Muskingum County land bank recently signed off on a deal with Woda Cooper Companies, a Columbus-based housing developer, to redevelop the Brighton Boulevard property once the building is torn down.

Woda Cooper plans to install 12 one-bedroom apartment, 26 two-bedroom, and 12 three-bedroom apartments. All will be available to low-income individuals. A timeline hasn't been set.

Brownfield Remediation Program funds will allow for asbestos abatement throughout the site. After cleanup, the county plans to rehabilitate the property as mixed-income residential units.
