Luis Severino was supposed to take the mound for the Yankees on Thursday night and try to get New York a sweep of the Rays, but instead, he’s headed to the COVID IL.

The team announced the move on Thursday, changing the probable starter to Clarke Schmidt, while signing pitcher Ryan Weber to a big-league deal and adding him to the 26-man roster.

Severino has been part of the Yankee rotation’s surge to the top of the MLB ranks this season, pitching tremendously in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery to the tune of a 2.80 ERA in 11 starts this season. Schmidt, a former first-round pick and hyped Yankee prospect, is holding a 3.26 ERA in 19.1 innings of work this season, all out of the bullpen. Thursday will be just his third big-league start.

Weber signed a minor-league deal with the Yanks in March and holds a career 5.28 ERA in seven big-league seasons that have included stints with five teams, including the Red Sox and Rays.
