YPSILANTI, MI -- After several years of operating out of just a drive-thru, Andrea White is happy to have tables and chairs again.

Cuppy’s Best Soulful Bistro, owned by White, will be opening a new location in early July, replacing the current drive-thru location with a combination of seated and drive-thru dining.

Cuppy’s will open at 2469 Washtenaw Road in Ypsilanti, closing down its current location connected to Sunoco Gas Station at 1030 Ecorse Road in Ypsilanti. White closed the Ecorse Road location in late May to aid in the transition.

Launched in 2010, the soul food restaurant has moved several times over the years, landing on Ecorse Road during the pandemic. Although the current location does has limited seating, White had restricted the restaurant to drive-thru only to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“At first I thought we were going to have to close our doors, but then out of nowhere, business started to ramp up,” White said.

The new location, which White updated with new bar stools and a refreshed color palette, will have both dine-in seating and a drive-thru. She also has plans to add outdoor seating, she said.

“I’ve missed serving people and seeing people enjoy the food,” White said.

Although most of the menu will stay the same, Cuppy’s will now feature breakfast. New menu items include chicken and waffles and pineapple upside-down waffles, as well as other dishes like shrimp and grits.

“I’m just looking to continue to supply good, authentic soul food in the community,” White said.

Cuppy’s Best Soul Food will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Breakfast will be served 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
