City sales and use tax increases by one percent July 1

Effective Friday, July 1, businesses collecting Burlington city sales and use tax from customers will increase the amount to 3%.

This is a change from the current amount of 2% being collected by businesses and submitted to the Department of Revenue, who then remits the tax back to the city on a monthly basis.

The state sales tax has not changed, nor has the manner of submitting tax to the state.

In the April 5 municipal election, electors residing within city limits voted for the tax increase by a margin of 506 to 311.

Revenue collected from this additional 1% sales tax increase will be earmarked to be used to maintain, rebuild and improve streets and alleyways, curb, gutter and sidewalks in the city.

The city mailed out notices recently making notification of the sales tax increase.

Anyone with questions may call city hall at 719-346-8652.
