SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. — Nicholas County Sheriff William Nunley is thanking “everyone who has reached out” to the department to express condolences following the death of two deputies since May 1.
Nunley issued a letter Wednesday thanking individuals and groups who have contacted the department after the deaths of Deputies Travis Lawson and Tom Baker. Lawson died in an off-duty motorcycle incident on May 10, and Baker died after being shot on June 3 while attempting to serve a warrant in the Birch River area of the county.
Nunley noted the department was “shaken to its core” following Lawson’s death, but Baker’s death was “unbearable” because of how close the two incidents happened.
“As we press on and continue to serve our community through our grief and pain, know that your support strengthens us and renews our spirits,” the sheriff said. “We have received phone calls, cards, letters, food, donations, assistance from other departments and much, much more.”
Nunley also asked the public to keep the agency and the victims’ families in their thoughts.
