One of the positions that Eddie Howe is expected to be looking to strengthen this summer is centre-back. Newcastle United already did a great job of bringing in reinforcements at the back in January by signing Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett, but the rumours have suggested that the manager is not quite satisfied yet and is looking for more.

Most of the recent links have been with Lille’s Sven Botman, but as that transfer saga has dragged on, it is safe to say that the Magpies should keep their options open and target other centre-backs as well.

One of the most exciting in the world over the last few years has been Jules Kounde of Sevilla. The French international was one of the best centre-backs in La Liga a couple of seasons back, and while his previous campaign was not as great, he remains one of the most highly-rated defenders in the world.

A move to Chelsea has been touted for months but has not materialised yet. And as reported by Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle United are also willing to pay his release clause. On the other hand, Barcelona seem to be in the mix as well but are limited by their economic situation.

Could Newcastle United sign Kounde this summer?

Signing someone with the quality of Kounde could be an incredible coup on the part of Newcastle United. The Frenchman has every technical ability in the world to be a success in the Premier League and the only question there is, is about whether he will be able to compete aerially.

Even if Newcastle United do end up making a move though, it is hard to see Kounde ending up at St James’ Park.

He has been linked with a move to Chelsea since last summer now and with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving as free agents, the Blues must be desperate to sign centre-backs.
