A teacher and coach with Upper Arlington Schools has been indicted on multiple charges stemming from alleged sex crimes against a minor more than 20 years ago.
Joel Cutler was indicted by a grand jury in Madison County on two counts of rape, four counts of sexual battery, and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to court documents.
Upper Arlington schools said the charges stem from alleged activities that happened with a student from 2000-03 but were reported to law enforcement last summer.
The school district said it was first notified of the investigation after the report was made to police last summer. He was placed on leave immediately and was instructed to have no contact with students or anyone else in the school community.
The district said he did not teach in 2021-22 and has been suspended without pay.
Upper Arlington School said it has been cooperating with investigators.
"We are devastated that one of our former students has been dealing with this for so many years, and we appreciate the courage it took to come forward. We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities as this case moves through the legal system. The safety of our students is our top priority every day, and we are committed to responding promptly and effectively to all reports of misconduct. All staff complete regular training to reinforce our policies, procedures and legal requirements as mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, sexual and otherwise. We encourage our students to approach an adult – a parent, teacher, counselor or any trusted employee – whenever an uncomfortable situation arises. We also have the Speak Up! Hotline through which reports can be made by phone or online and can remain anonymous. It is our policy to immediately report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities," the district said in a statement.
