New England Patriots, Robert Kraft give thousands to Boston school for wellness initiatives
There was extra excitement at recess Wednesday as New England Patriots running back Jonas Gray threw passes and cheerleaders led ladder drills.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. K-8 School in Dorchester was awarded a $10,000 grant thanks to a partnership with New England Dairy and the New England Patriots.
“We’re going to present your Principal Coleman-Burns with a $10,000 Hometown Grant to support your health and wellness,” New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft said.
Half of the money will go toward food and nutrition for the school and the other half will be used to purchase physical activity equipment for students.
Coleman-Burns was ecstatic when she learned her school had been selected as the recipient of the Hometown Grant.
“We have 11 kindergarten classrooms, and we’re really looking forward to getting some equipment for them,” Coleman-Burns said. “Our big kids get, you know, the field and the basketball court, and so we’re really excited to give them some play equipment.”
“When we are in recess, we don’t have too much for play. You only play like tag and something like that, and sometimes you get bored of things like that,” one student said.
Kraft then through the school a surprise – he donated an extra $25,000.
