Bicyclist hit by truck on I29 has died from his injuries

A 53-year-old Canadian man has died as a result of injuries sustained shortly before Noon Thursday in a vehicle-bicycle crash about 17-miles north of Brookings in Deuel County.

According to the South Dakota Highway patrol Jean-Pierre Petit of Winnipeg, Manitoba was riding his bicycle southbound along the fogline of Interstate 29 when he was struck by a southbound 2015 International straight truck. The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital. He died there on Monday.

The driver of the truck, 65-year-old Mark Akkerman of Brandon, was not injured. Charges are pending.
