Atlanta Braves put Ozzie Albies on 60-day IL, bring up Phil Gosselin

On Tuesday afternoon, the Atlanta Braves that they placed Ozzie Albies on the 60-day injured list, bringing up veteran infielder Phil Gosselin in a corresponding move.

In last night’s game against the Washington Nationals, Albies left the game in the top of the fifth inning after an apparent injury to his left foot. Orlando Arcia replaced him at second after his exit from the contest.

Shortly after his injury, the organization confirmed that Albies fractured his left foot.

With his placement on the 60-day injured list, the earliest Albies will be available to return is Aug. 13. However, the severity of his fracture has yet to be announced with a timetable unknown for his possible return.

With Albie’s injury, the Atlanta Braves elected to turn to a familiar face, calling up Phil Gosselin from Triple-A Gwinnett. With the Stripers, “Goose,” has slashed .297/.358/.473 through 204 plate appearances, while picking up eight home runs and 24 RBI.

Gosselin signed with the Atlanta Braves on a minor league deal after spending time with the Los Angeles Angels. Gosselin was non-tendered by the Angels on November 30th, making him a free agent. Atlanta signed him to a minor league deal on March 20.

This will mark Gosselin’s first time since the 2015 season putting on an Atlanta Braves uniform, with the Braves selecting him in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB Draft and calling him up to the big leagues in 2013. Gosselin also had a brief stint in the Braves’ minor league system during the 2018 season, spending all of his time with Gwinnett.

Despite the return of an old friend to Atlanta, Orlando Arcia will be expected to fill the hole at second base during Albies’ absence while Gosselin serves as infield depth for the time being.

In 17 games and 48 at-bats this season, Arcia has slashed .313/393/..458 while picking up a home run and five RBI.
