The Wiener Staatsoper has confirmed that Anna Netrebko will return to the company during the 2022-23 season.

The soprano will sing the title role of “Aida” on Jan. 14, 18, 21, and 24 alongside Jonas Kaufmann, Elīna Garanča, and Luca Salsi. The news comes after the company originally announced the production without Netrebko due to the War in Ukraine.

However, during the press conference for the presentation of the new season, Bogdan Roscic noted that he was against the Russian ban and “I personally do not believe that Ms. Netrebko should be banned from working in the country of which she is a citizen.”

The news comes as the soprano returned to the stage last month at the Philharmonie de Paris and the Teatro alla Scala following the soprano’s statement condemning the war and distancing herself from Putin. The soprano next performs at the Arena di Verona.
