Sometimes, it becomes clear that the relationship between a player and an NBA team has grown toxic. Other times, it’s best to see the warning signs and move a player before the relationship reaches that point.

That’s a better description of the situation between Julius Randle and the New York Knicks. After a sterling 2020-21 season, Randle’s efficiency took a major hit in 2021-22.

The Knicks’ win total followed a similar trajectory. As is often the case, losing resulted in tension. Randle was seen in verbal altercations with staff and/or teammates on more than one occasion.

That’s nothing we’ve never seen overcome before, but it’s also the type of tension we’ve seen destroy NBA relationships.
