Joe Maddon got a mohawk to spark struggling Angels — then got fired

Joe Maddon hoped to reinvigorate his struggling Los Angeles Angels team by debuting a wild new look — only to be fired before any of his players could see it.

Maddon, who was axed as the Angels’ manager last week amid a 12-game losing streak, dealt with the hairy situation by shaving off some of his own locks for a mohawk, according to ESPN’s Tim Kurkijan. The 68-year-old skipper opted for the new ‘do in an effort to bring smiles to the down-trodden clubhouse and “awaken the team.” Unfortunately for Maddon, he was terminated before he could test the style out.

Maddon’s new look was just one of the few experiments the Angels resorted to in hopes of breaking a franchise-worst 14-game skid.

During Wednesday’s home game versus the Boston Red Sox, Angels hitters changed their walk-up songs to a collection of hits from Nickelback, of all bands. The valiant effort produced little success, however, as Los Angeles lost, 1-0.

The Angels did snap their losing streak Thursday with a 5-2 win over the Red Sox.
