An earthquake struck far eastern Kentucky Thursday night.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the 2.2 magnitude quake was reported at 11:19 Thursday night in Leslie County, about seven miles southwest of Hyden. The quake had a depth of less than one mile, which likely resulted in some residents experiencing shaking.

On average, earthquakes occur about 6.2 miles below the earth’s surface, but have occurred as many as 435 miles below the surface.
