The Flying Elbow, 229 N. 13th Street, Marshalltown, won the 2022 Iowa's Best Burger contest with a stacked smashburger.

The best burgers from Iowa and New York are going head-to-head again in a battle to determine which state will claim the title — and bragging rights — for the best burger in 2022.

Iowa was crowned champion over New York in last year's Best Burger Battle, sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and its New York counterpart, the New York Beef Council, with the Bino Burger from Bambino’s in Ossian.

Last month, The Flying Elbow in Marshalltown took Iowa's state title in the annual Best Burger Contest. The winning patty, The Tombstone, is made of chuck brisket, short rib and Wagyu beef, topped with Manchego cheese, guacamole, bacon sour cream, tomato, and death valley hot sauce on the side — a combination that doubled business for the restaurant and one the owner, Garrett Goodman, claims you can't find anywhere else.

Owner Garrett Goodman stands with Iowa's Best Burger 2022 at The Flying Elbow, 229 N. 13th Street, Marshalltown.

New York's best burger title, awarded to the Holy Smokers Burger at Ale 'n' Angus Pub in Syracuse, is made up of an Angus beef patty, topped with beef brisket, pepper jack cheese, onion and the restaurant's house-made brown sugar barbeque sauce, on a pretzel bun.

Starting this week, the public can vote for either The Flying Elbow in Iowa or Ale n’ Angus Pub in New York using the online nomination form at iabeef.org/events/best-burger-contest/burger-battle. Voting will be open until 11:59 p.m. June 13.
