Near-head-on crash with semi-truck in Clay County sends woman to hospital

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A woman has been taken to the hospital following a near-head-on collision with a semi in Clay County.

According to Clay County Sheriff Paul Harden, the crash occurred at the intersection of SR 59 and County Road 600 south. Harden says that two passenger vehicles were traveling northbound when the leading vehicle attempted to turn and was struck from behind by the other vehicle.

The vehicle that rear-ended the other then swerved into the southbound lanes where it struck a semi-truck nearly head-on.

Sheriff Harden didn’t speculate on the severity of the injuries to the female driver of that passenger vehicle but said she was taken by ambulance to Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit from behind was uninjured as well as the semi driver according to Harden

After the collision, the semi came to a rest in a field next to the road where it lost up to 100 gallons of fuel. Harden says a hazmat team was brought in to clean up the spill.

SR 59 was shut down for some time as crews cleaned up the wreckage, but has since re-opened.
