FORT JONES, Calif. (KNX) – A Northern California man drowned at Shackleford Falls Saturday after he tried to rescue his dogs, officials said.

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Robert Lewis, of Montague, went to the waterfall's base to rescue two of the family dogs.

His wife, who called 9-1-1, told deputies she “saw her husband get swept under by the strong current and did not resurface.”

Multiple agencies responded and conducted a search of the area.
The search resumed Sunday where “a water search canine provided by Siskiyou County Search and Rescue signaled the area of the pool at the base of the waterfall where Lewis was believed to have drowned,” the department said.

Divers, however, couldn’t go into the waters due unsafe water flow.

Lewis’ body was found underwater just before 2 p.m.

According to Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Courtney Kreider, one of the family dogs, a German Shepard, was found dead Saturday night. The other, a smaller dog, has not resurfaced at this time.
