Tigers put Jeimer Candelario on injured list, activate veteran outfielder

The Detroit Tigers have placed infielder Jeimer Candelario on the 10-day injured list after he injured his left shoulder while diving for a ball on Sunday in New York.

In a corresponding move, outfielder Austin Meadows was reinstated from the injured list. He’s spent the last three weeks recovering from an illness that was causing symptoms of vertigo.

With Candelario out, the Tigers are likely to use Harold Castro and Kody Clemens at the hot corner.

Meadows joins a depleted outfield that currently includes Willi Castro, Derek Hill and Daz Cameron, although Robbie Grossman should return by this weekend. Victor Reyes and perhaps rookie Riley Greene aren’t far behind.

Outfielder Akil Baddoo, demoted to Triple-A Toledo last month, has also resumed playing with Triple-A Toledo after suffering an oblique injury.

Although Meadows has yet to hit a home run in 116 plate appearances, he was one of the Tigers’ most productive offensive players before his injury, posting a .709 OPS (112 OPS+) with 12 walks and 14 strikeouts.

The Tigers open a brief two-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at PNC Park.

Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal (4-4, 2.15 ERA) will face Pirates lefty Jose Quintana (1-2, 2.32).

Catcher Jake Rogers (right elbow sprain); and right-handed pitchers Jose Cisnero (right shoulder sprain), Kyle Funkhouser (right shoulder strain), Casey Mize (right elbow sprain) and Spencer Turnbull (right elbow sprain) are on the 60-day injured list, which removes them from the 40-man roster.
