Laura Whitmore has shut down criticism of her hosting on Love Island ahead of the new series of the reality show.

The ITV2 show returned to screens last night (June 6), though it seems the presenter was subjected to a raft of negative comments beforehand.

Taking to her TikTok page, Laura posted a clip with the caption: "Shall we get this out of the way, then we can enjoy the juicy bits! See ya Monday."

The first comment she posted said: "I think it's ridiculous that Laura flies back and forth - send the guests there!"

The host then clarified: "The Villa is Mallorca and Aftersun is London. This is the situation for any host, always has been. If I could stay in Mallorca I would. But at the moment, flying me back [sic] and is MORE EFFICIENT than bringing our new guests and audience every week. I have it in my contract to offset carbon emissions."

Another comment suggested that she "has the easiest job on the telly! She gets paid £50k a minute. It's an outrage!"

Noting the double standards compared to her husband Iain Stirling, Laura wrote in response: "Firstly, Iain has never had attention on money he earns. Why don't we like women earning money? I bloody wish I earned what was written in the press! I only get paid days I work."

She also hit back at the "exhausting" suggestions that she should be fired, noting they happen "every year".

Another comment claimed: "She's so boring. Why doesn't she ask more? What's with all the pauses!?" Laura replied: "DRAMA baby! If I was on hosting duties I would be having full on banter.

"But I can't. I need to stay as impartial as possible and trust the process. Last year with social distancing I couldn't even give them a hug! And I am a hugger."

Laura also slammed comments saying she was "too old", saying: "I don't plan to date the Love Islanders. I am the HOST. Age means experience and it's a privilege."

Following the series' first episode, fans already have a mixed reaction to one recoupling twist for the new islanders.

Love Island airs on ITV2 and is available via catch up on ITV Hub and Britbox.
