Rather than do the awards ceremony like the NHL has done in years prior, this year the NHL decided to name the award winners each night during the Conference Finals of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs and will continue to do so throughout the remainder of the postseason.

Tonight, prior to game four between the Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche, the NHL announced the winner of the lone award that a Winnipeg Jets player was a finalist for.

The award is the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy and Kyle Connor was up against Jaccob Slavin of the Carolina Hurricanes and Jared Spurgeon of the Minnesota Wild.

Kyle Connor of the Winnipeg Jets was named the winner of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy

The Lady Byng is awarded “to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.”

Connor demonstrated his sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct and was arguably the Jets’ MVP of the 2021-2022 season.

If you did not get the chance to watch Connor play this season, the twenty-five-year-old’s stats tell the whole story. In 79 games played, Connor had 47 goals, 46 assists, and a minus-three plus/minus, while only having four penalty minutes for the whole season.

Another interesting way to look at this stat is how Connor compared to the rest of the league. Connor finished top-thirteen in the league in points with 93 and was the only player in the top-100 point scorers to have single-digit penalty minutes.

This is Kyle Connor’s first time winning a league-wide award and he fully deserved this one. Going into next season, Connor will have three seasons remaining on the seven-year deal that he signed with the Jets back in September of 2019.
