The Chicago Bears did very little to put Justin Fields in a situation for him to perform and help the team win games this season. The second-year quarterback has a pretty bleak situation to work with given the supporting cast around him.
The offensive line lacks experience, as Larry Borom and Teven Jenkins, both entering their third seasons in the NFL, are penciled into the starting tackle spots. The situation at wide receiver could use some attention as well.
While Fields has shown great leadership and poise when talking to the media, showing confidence in the wide receivers on the roster, that group could certainly use some help. Outside of Darnell Mooney, the depth chart is filled with players that haven’t been asked to do more than fill complementary roles in an offense.
Byron Pringle, Equanimeous St. Brown, Tajae Sharpe, Dante Pettis and David Moore were all signed this offseason, but none of them have topped 50 receptions or 600 yards in a season. That could leave this passing offense grounded throughout the season.
The remainder of the Bears’ offseason should be spent looking for players to help bolster the offense. One team that they could give a call to is the New York Giants, whose wide receiver position is in a bit of a state of flux as well.
Chicago could inquire about what it would take to land Kenny Golladay in a trade. Golladay was Dave Gettleman’s big prize in free agency in 2021 and his first season with Big Blue was a disastrous one.
Golladay caught only 37 passes for 521 yards and zero touchdowns in the first season of a four-year, $72 million deal. A lot of his struggles can be attributed to underwhelming quarterback play, as the Giants has Daniel Jones, Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm all start games last season.
Before injuries began plaguing him in 2020, Golladay was cementing himself as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL during his tenure with the Detroit Lions. He had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2018 and 2019, leading the league with 11 touchdowns in 2019.
The Bears saw that first-hand as an NFC North rival to the Lions. While he hasn’t shown that level of dominance in a few years, it would be a worthwhile gamble for them to take as they need any help they can get at wide receiver.
Strapped for cap space, the Giants would likely be interested in any trade talks involving Golladay as it would help them save some money.
