LeRoy Ellsworth Burks

October 22, 1951 - May 26, 2022

LeRoy Burks, 70 year old Freedom resident, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2022 at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 1:00 pm in the American Legion Building in Freedom, Oklahoma. Friends will gather to enjoy a casual event to eat, fellowship, share stories, and celebrate LeRoy.

LeRoy Ellsworth Burks was born October 22, 1951 to Edward LeRoy Burks and Marquita Ann Martin in Alva, Oklahoma. LeRoy was reared in Freedom. He attended Freedom schools and graduated from Freedom High School in 1969. He then attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.

LeRoy was united into marriage to Sue Calivas on January 7, 2000 in Enid, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in Enid before settling in Freedom. LeRoy worked on the Enid Police Department as a patrolman for 25 years before he retired. He then became the Chief of Police at NWOSU in Alva and retired after 16 years. LeRoy dedicated 41 years to the protection and service of his community. LeRoy enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and listening to "old" country music. What brought him the most joy was spending time outdoors with his grandchildren and all his "damn dogs".

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Sue Burks of the home; daughters, Melissa Burks Smith and husband Markus; RaeAnna Pankey and husband Brenden; son, Michael Wisel and wife Jennifer; brothers, Kelvin Burks; Brian Burks and wife Margaret; sister, Cindra Jones and husband Richard; grandchildren Dylan Burks and wife Nikita; Sophia Means, Taylor Harrison, Dalton McRae, Raven Wisel, and Chase Wisel; three great-grandchildren, Layla Burks, Taggerung McRae, and Kydd-Michael Wisel.

He is preceded in death by both parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom Fire and Ambulance with the Billings Funeral Home accepting the contributions.
