Wil Myers had sat four of five days with discomfort in his right knee before Padres put him on the injured list Friday

Wil Myers will get a bit more time to whip his right knee into playing shape.

The 31-year-old outfielder was placed on the injured list before Friday’s 5:10 p.m. start in Milwaukee, retroactive to June 1. He’d sat four of the last five days while contending with an injury — a cartilage flap that’s partially separated from the bone and rubbing against his kneecap — that’s required treatment all season.

Myers’ knee received an injection on Tuesday but it hasn’t responded as well as hoped.

To replace Myers, outfielder Brent Rooker was called up from Triple-A El Paso. Acquired in the Taylor Rogers trade, the 27-year-old Rooker was hitting .242/.357/.568 with nine homers and 23 RBIS in 26 games in the Pacific Coast League.

Rooker has 10 homers and a .212/.299/.413 batting line over his first 65 games in the majors, all with the Twins.

Rooker, however, is not in Friday’s lineup as Nomar Mazara, called up Thursday, is again in right field and batting sixth.

Mazara was 1-for-2 on Thursday in his Padres’ debut before Jose Azocar pinch-hit for him in the sixth inning against left-hander Brent Suter, resulting in a double for Azocar.

Two batters later, Jorge Alfaro hit a home run that opened up a 3-0 lead.

Alfaro will sit in favor of Austin Nola getting the start behind the plate and in the nine-hole.

Nola is hitting .226/.294/.282 on the season but .271/.327/.313 over his last 15 games.

Ha-Seong Kim is back in the lineup, at shortstop and batting seventh, after a day off on Thursday allowed Sergio Alcantara to receive his second start with the Padres.

Alcantara was 0-for-2 with a walk a sacrifice fly that opened up a 4-1 lead in the ninth of a game the Padres lost a half-inning later.

Kim is hitting .221/.308/.369 on the season.

Before the game, the Brewers called up catcher Alex Jackson — the sixth overall pick out of Rancho Bernardo High in 2014 — as well as utilityman Pablo Reyes from Triple-A Nashville. Infielder Mike Brosseau was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right ankle, right-hander Peter Strzelecki was optioned to Nashville and catcher Alex Hall was designated for assignment.

Jackson, 26, is 2-for-7 in the majors this season and hitting .231/.319/.423 with two homers in 23 games at Nashville.

Jackson will back up Victor Caratini, who is batting eighth on Friday and taking on a larger role with Omar Narvaez landed on the COVID-19 injured list on Thursday.

Friday’s pitching matchup

Padres RHP Joe Musgrove (5-0, 1.86 ERA)

The Padres had won every one of his starts until the bullpen blew Saturday’s game. He still allowed just one run in six innings, his ninth straight quality start to begin the 2022 season. A former NL Central pitcher, Musgrove is making his eighth start against the Brewers (4.83 ERA). He allowed two runs in 11 2/3 innings in two starts last year against Milwaukee.

Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (3-2, 1.95 ERA)

The reigning NL Cy Young winner beat the Padres last week with five strikeouts over six innings of one-run ball. He tied a season high with 11 strikeouts over seven shutout innings to beat the Cardinals in his last start. Burnes has allowed more than two runs in just two of his 10 starts.

Here is how he’d done against current Padres hitters, none of whom have managed an extra-base hit in 70 collective plate appearances:
