How Crane Elementary School District is keeping its students safe

A new security system in place at Crane Schools allows for them to go into immediate lockdown, along with letting police know about potential threats - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Crane Elementary School District is installing a new security system in its schools.

Giving them a full look at the campus if there’s a threat, along with an immediate alert to local police.

Crane school district superintendent Laurie Doering says the system has been a focus for the district for quite some time.

Especially with the recent shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

“It’s devastating and overwhelming, the first priority in any school is the safety and well being of their children, both physically as well as mentally,” Doering said.

The Crane Elementary School District currently has buttons similar to fire alarms in place at seven of its schools.

When pushed, the alarms put the campus on lockdown.

Locking doors and notifying local police immediately.

“What’s interesting is recently we had a false alarm where a preschool student pushed a button and the police were at the school within three minutes, so I’m pleased to say that this does work,” Doering said.

The district also has a command center at its office.

The center features four TV’s and a computer, all of which can tap into school security feeds.

Letting them know the exact location of a potential threat on campus.

“When a lockdown is initiated at one of the sites, the district leadership team plus other individuals would meet in this space as well as the command center, walk through, be able to provide that assistance to the incident commander who is at the site,” Doering said.

Right now the alarm system is at seven of 10 Crane schools, and will be coming to the remaining schools soon.
