A Utah man was killed in a crash in Eureka County on May 27.
Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a crash on I-80 near mile marker 267 around 11 p.m. This location is about 12 miles west of Carlin.
Preliminary investigation determined that a Freightliner combination tractor with trailer commercial motor vehicle (CMV) was traveling west on Interstate 80 in the right travel lane. The CMV was traveling too fast for the wet roadway conditions and the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The CMV struck the left guardrail and was re-directed back across the travel lanes where it struck the right guardrail. The CMV partially jack-knifed resulting in it blocking the shoulder and both travel lanes.
A white Acura SUV was also traveling west on the interstate in the righthand lane and it approaching the crashed CMV. The driver failed to slow down and the front left of the Acura struck the right rear of the CMV’s trailer.
The driver of the Acura, identified as 25-year-old Juan Alvarado-Martinez of Salt Lake City, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The remaining occupants of the Acura were transported from the scene for medical treatment. The driver of the commercial motor vehicle was not injured.
The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.).
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information about it is asked to contact Trooper Mitch Payne of the NHP Elko Office at (775) 753-1111.
