Former Penn State linebacker Jan Johnson will be joining the Virginia Tech coaching staff as a defensive analyst. Johnson will reunite with his linebackers coach at Penn State and now-Hokies head coach Brent Pry.

Johnson, who went to Governor Mifflin High School, played for Penn State from 2016-19 and was a starter for two seasons, becoming a team captain after coming to campus as a preferred walk-on.

In 2018, he recorded 72 tackles (1.5 for loss). As a senior in 2019, he recorded 64 tackles (4.5 for loss), one sack, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention

Johnson then was signed by the Houston Texans as a priority free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, he was cut by the Texans before the regular season. He had tryouts with the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans but never appeared in an NFL regular-season game.

Johnson will join a staff that has plenty of Penn State connections. He will be joining offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, who was previously the tight ends coach at Penn State. He will also be joined by football chief of staff Michael Hazel, who most recently served as Penn State’s senior director of football operations.
