The Lucas County Board of Supervisors voted to declare April Child Abuse Prevention Month in the county during their first April meeting.

CPPC_Coordinator Jocelyn Blazek and President of Parents and Children First of Lucas County Shannon Page attended the meeting for the proclamation with Blazek requesting the board designate the month as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the county.

Different activities are held throughout the month of April to raise awareness about child abuse and how to prevent it. Blue pinwheels are usually used to decorate during the month as the color blue represents child abuse and neglect awareness.

The board approved several reports during the meeting. The veteran's affairs report for March with $2,783.23 in expenses was approved. The treasurer's monthly report for March with total revenue of $5,794,634.90, disbursements of $1,036,897.66 and balance of account $11,993,911.06 was approved. The recorders report for March with $8,438.07 of fees collected was approved. And the sheriff's bi-monthly report from March 16 to April 6 showing $28,454.23 in expenses was approved.

A fireworks permit for Mark Frazier in Liberty Township for July 2 was approved. The show will be at 9 p.m. at Frazier Pond and will be put on by members of the Chariton Volunteer Fire Department.

The board approved the appointment of Bernard Beary to serve on the Lucas County Planning and Zoning Board for a 5-year term from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2027. The board also approved the re-appointment of Alma VanderWoude to serve on the Lucas County Planning and Zoning Board for a 5-year term from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 20227

The board considered and approved a request for tax abatement of special assessments on 1632 Armory Ave. of $1,062.50. The abatement request was received by the city of Chariton and passed on to the board.

The board approved the liquor license for The Junction in Lucas and for the Lucas County Fair Association.

Lucas County Veterans Affairs Coordinator Dave Amos told the board that VA clinics will be moving from the VA hospital to the old Toys R Us building at Southridge Mall in the near future and that May 6 will be Vietnam War recognition day at the memorial at the capital.

In sheriff's office business, the board approved a resolution stating the sheriff's office had accepted the resignation of deputy Isaac Palmer effective April 1.

Secondary Roads presented a permit to work in the road right-of-way for someone placing a driveway at 31251 440th St. in Russell and a permit for Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative to place buried cable under county road right-of-way in Cedar Township, Section 35. The board approved both permits.

The board also approved quarterly reports for the recorder's office showing $22,734.30 in fees collected and a quarterly report for the sheriff's office for Jan. 1-March 31 showing a beginning balance of $253.13, deposits of $16,082.81 withdrawals of $14,591.39 and an ending balance of $1,744.55.

The board approved the transfer of $245,834.78 from the Rural Basic fund to the Secondary Roads fund and the board approved claims in the amount of $216,064.32 before adjourning the meeting.
